CDM Invests in 5-axis Capability

In 2014, when CDM (UK) Limited made its first investment in a 5-Axis machine during the MACH event, the precision engineering firm promptly sought assistance from ROEMHELD to procure a 5-Axis vice tailored to its manufacturing requirements.

Following the installation of the 5-Axis machine, CDM encountered issues with the vice purchased simultaneously, which proved unreliable and prone to slipping. Seeking a solution, the company turned to ROEMHELD, who provided them with an MC100 5-Axis vice from its Hilma range. Since integrating the ROEMHELD vice in October, CDM has been impressed by its accuracy and reliability.

Stephen Townsend, co-owner and Director of CDM Precision Engineering, remarked, "The ROEMHELD vice is working brilliantly, and all the operators are very impressed with it. We’ve been able to machine parts in 304 stainless steel with a 4mm depth of cut. The vice we had on the machine before was not a patch on the ROEMHELD one.”

Operating from Blackburn, CDM Engineering has been a stalwart in producing high-quality precision components for various industries, including motor, carpet tufting, textile, and food, since 1987. The company, which began in a modest 1000 sq.ft. rented unit, now operates from an 8,500 sq. ft. facility and employs 12 staff members. Offering a comprehensive range of sub-contract machine services, including CNC turning and milling, boring, grinding, welding, and gear cutting, CDM prides itself on delivering quality, precision, and adaptability in every project, regardless of scale.

CDM has earned its reputation through innovative solutions and problem-solving. This commitment to providing optimal manufacturing solutions for customers prompted CDM to invest in its first-ever 5-Axis machine, further solidifying its position as a leader in precision engineering.

Stephen Townsend explained, “We were being increasingly approached about more work that needed 5-Axis capability, so we decided to bite the bullet and invest in a 5-Axis machine. We have since found that even doing our conventional 3-Axis and 4-Axis work on the 5-Axis machine is quicker and more accurate. For example, one job that would normally take seven separate operations can be done in a single pass on the 5-Axis machine.”

Training in Preparation for Increased Productivity and Value

CDM recognized the need to upgrade its programming software to accommodate the intricacies of 5-Axis machining. An operator has already undergone training on the new software, with plans for further training for shopfloor personnel. Additionally, access to 5-Axis step/CAD files from ROEMHELD has proven invaluable during the manufacturing process planning phase.

Despite being in the early stages of implementation, CDM has already experienced heightened productivity and the ability to deliver higher value work with the 5-Axis machine paired with the ROEMHELD vice. Fully integrated alongside the company’s existing three 3-Axis machines, this 5-Axis machining capability empowers CDM to undertake more intricate and demanding precision engineering projects.

From ROEMHELD Northern Area Manager, Phil Cable, “We are seeing more and more companies like CDM investing in 5-Axis technology so that they can increase their manufacturing potential. Our 5-Axis vice range has been designed to help companies of all sizes to maximize productivity while delivering the highest levels of accuracy.”
